The Wings for Life World Run

The Wings for Life World Run is a global race with 100% of the entry fees going directly to the Wings for Life Foundation for Spinal Cord Research. The race takes place in more than 30 locations worldwide and all runners start at exactly the same time. The goal for every runner is to run as far as they can and until the catcher car chases them down.

The Selfie Run

For those who can't run in one of the locations, we found a smart approach: As Selfie Runners, anyone can participate in the global running phenomenon. No matter where you are, how fit or fast you are or how far you can go: The Selfie Run is about getting the world running at the same time. And with the Selfie Run app we created a tool that allows every runner worldwide to be part of that unique experience.

"The Wings for Life World Run is not only about running. The challenge was to create an app, which also transfers the emotions of the race to every runner, no matter where they actually run."
— Nina Schwebach, Lead Digital Project Manager

Get race ready and experience the whole thing

We set up the app with lots of cool features to prep runners for race day: The training mode allows users to run in a virtual catcher car mode to see how far they would get under race conditions. Users can set their personal distance goal. Every Selfie Runner is encouraged to set a location where they will be starting their Selfie Run on race day and to find other Selfie Runners nearby.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

While designing and developing the app, it was always vital to make everything as simple and easy to use as possible; even though it contains so much complex technology.

Smart search features

Smart search features

The app comes with smart search boxes, which present matching results while typing.

LIST CONTROLS

LIST CONTROLS

Selection controls allow the user to select options. The option that the switch controls, as well as the state it’s in, are made clear from the corresponding inline label. Selection controls use the theme’s accent color.

MODAL BOTTOM SHEETS

MODAL BOTTOM SHEETS

Bottom sheets slide up from the bottom edge of the screen to reveal additional content or to introduce new content on a unique surface.

DIALOGS WITH CTA

DIALOGS WITH CTA

Dialogs inform users about critical information or require users to make decisions. Dialogs always retain focus until dismissed or a required action has been taken, such as choosing a setting.

SNACKBARS & TOASTS

SNACKBARS & TOASTS

Snackbars provide lightweight feedback about an operation to the user by showing a brief message at the bottom of the screen.

ICONOGRAPHY

ICONOGRAPHY

Each icon is reduced to its minimal form, with every idea edited to its essence. The designs ensure readability and clarity even at small sizes.

Sharing User Generated Content

App users are able to share content via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Whether it's sharing your personal goal, a training run or a donation that has been made: By seeding content on social media, we aimed to increase the awareness for the Wings for Life World Run.

Material Design

Material Design

We created a visual language for the app that provides first of all state-of-the art design, but which is also both functional and aesthetically appealing.

Live connectivity

Live connectivity

Connected to the technology used in the race control centre, app users receive the race countdown in real-time and can listen to the live radio while running.

UX matters

UX matters

We take user experience just as serious as visual identity to ensure an easy understanding how to interact with the app.

"It was not enough that we build a product that functions, that was understandable and usable, we subtracted the obvious and added the necessary. Thanks to that, we accomplished our main goal to get the best experience to users on both, iOS and Android platforms."
— Ricard Rovira, Art Director
